Cultivating Creativity at the Holidays
I’ve not been a huge fan of the Christmas Season over the years. I have worked to redefine my relationship with it after years of working retail and feeling disappointed by the materialism of it all and seeing those I love feel the pressure to measure up to expectations and traditions. But over time, I have let my creative side come through, often with an element of humor.
One year I made Christmas Pants instead of stockings. I giggled as I sewed together the pairs of tiny pants with everyone’s names on them. They were so fun to give.
For the last several years, I have joined in on compiling a Holiday Mix CD with my partner- something he started in 2004- and we just had a “CD Release Party” with a few friends last weekend.
I have found that creating new traditions can really distract from the “shoulds” and “have-tos” that stress us out, as long as there is joy in the process and a release of perfection. How about you? What are you letting go of and what are you getting goofy with?
